Carmel Tebbutt Resigns
I have just heard that the Member for Marrickville, Carmel Tebbutt, has decided to resign from the frontbench to spend more time with her young son. This is a most unexpected development. Tebbutt is widely considered one of the most effective members of the Ministry; not only a potential Deputy Premier, but a potential Premier. Her decision is understandable, but a sizeable loss to the newly endorsed NSW Government. Rumours suggested that she may take the Health portfolio after the election; evidently, they were wrong.
This makes for yet another extra place on the front bench - one likely to be taken by a member of the Left - and a new Education Minister.
Intriguing.

I'm not sure I agree with the timing. I wonder whether voters had a right to know that Tebbutt was planning to move away from the frontbench prior to the election?
I can definitely understand her decision but I think she should have made it earlier or six months down the track.
From the sound of things, the timing was not meant to be strategic, and wasn't particularly pre-meditated either. Certainly, nobody I know that are close to her office had the slightest inkling.
As far as the Left candidates for cabinet go, I've heard Linda Burney, Phil Koperberg, Nathan Rees, Verity Firth, Paul Lynch and Peter Primrose all mentioned. I'd say roughly half of those names are plausible.
